New biometric security systems based on iris recognition and face recognition technology and stereo speakers that can be both flat and transparent, are just two of the leading edge developments that will feature on the UK pavilion at Comdex Fall 2002 - North America's largest Information Technology trade fair - held in Las Vegas, 18th-22nd November 2002.
Other technologies on show will include: magnetic sensors that can detect cracks in rail track - or detect landmines; high technology retail security 'tags' based on magnetic wires; and a high-quality holography system that allow high value artefacts to be displayed without risk of damage.
The Iris recognition system that will be demonstrated at the show was developed by Professor John Daugman of Cambridge University.
His technology is at the heart of all iris recognition cameras currently deployed at airports, US prisons and nuclear power stations.
Prof Daugman's system came to prominence through its use in tracing the "Afghan Girl" featured on a 1984 cover of National Geographic Magazine.
When, 18 years later, the magazine wanted to feature the girl, who lived in a remote part of Afghanistan, iris recognition provided the only sure way of confirming her identity.
The UK@Comdex pavilion is jointly organised by Trade Partners UK and Invest.UK.
It will bring together a number of the UK's development agencies, each bringing with them some of their leading universities, and a group of UK IT companies committed to developing international relationships and business.
The companies will be part of a group exhibiting with support from Trade Partners UK and organised by Intellect, a UK Trade Association for information technology, telecommunications and electronics, and Smart South West, a private-public partnership to promote the information society in the south west of England.
UK@Comdex will give overseas companies the opportunity to exploit the huge trade, investment and partnership opportunities the UK offers in the way that best suited their business strategy - as commercial partnerships or joint ventures, research contracts, distributorships, product sourcing, inward investments or technology transfers.
More than 2000 companies will exhibit at Comdex Fall, which expects to attract over 125,000 visitors.
