SanDisk has extended its family or removable Flash-based data storage solutions with its introduction of a plug-in, USB-2 interface-compatible Flash drive. Rugged and compact, the new UFD has been designed to meet the removable storage requirements of the escalating number of users whose desktop and laptop PCs are equipped with a USB port instead of the conventional floppy disk slot. Currently available in six capacities spanning 32Mbyte to 1Gbyte, the UFD is powered directly from the USB port of a Windows PC or an Apple Mac, consuming less than 650uA on standby and less than 150mA when operating.
The UFD will withstand an 80g shock when out of the PC and a 4g shock for11ms while installed and operating.
SanDisk's proven Flash technology ensures 100,000 read/write cycles under typical conditions and data retention in excess of 10 years.
User convenience is enhanced by the UFD's small, flat profile that doesn't obstruct access to adjacent ports when the device is installed in the PC, and enables it to be carried comfortably and conveniently in the wallet or the pocket.
A built-in LED tells the user when the UFD is receiving or transmitting data.
According to Tony Shaw, European Product Line Manager with Spectrum, SanDisk's Sales and Marketing Representative, the UFD is ideal for companies seeking to offer an affordable but reliable removable mass-storage device as "bundled" added-value, or as an incentive and/or promotional item: "The UFD's unique shape provides great scope for customisation using most conventional product marking techniques", said Shaw.
