Sequence Design's PowerTheater has been adopted to automate the power analysis of advanced 130nm ASICs by Ricoh Company, one of the world's leading suppliers of office equipment, including copiers, printers, and related supplies and services.

Complete results on Ricoh's use of PowerTheater will be presented at a Sequence low-power design seminar in Tokyo on 4th July.

Prior to using PowerTheater, Ricoh relied on a conventional spreadsheet approach to analyse power dissipation and consumption, according to Makoto Saito, Ricoh group leader, 1st Development Section, 2nd Development Department, Platform Development Center, Imaging System Business Group.

"Using this approach we consistently exceeded the limitations of metal layers needed for these devices", Saito said.

"The only way to meet power budgets, therefore, was to increase the number of metal layers which would have a major impact on cost".

Since switching to PowerTheater, providing accurate and automated RTL power estimation, Ricoh designers can now minimise power early in the design cycle and verify that power budgets are met.

The result was that additional metal layers were avoided, according to Saito.

"As these results clearly demonstrate, power analysis is becoming the critical IC design element of the decade", said Vic Kulkarni, Sequence President and CEO.

"We are pleased to have Ricoh join a rapidly expanding list of leading technology companies that are focused on low-power design and using PowerTheater to manage power consumption effectively".
