Specialist Electronics Services (SES), a leading designer and manufacturer of rugged solid state data recorders, rugged recording media and data reconstruction software, has been awarded a major contract by the MoD's Defence Logistics Organisation. The contract is to supply a fleet-wide fit of its S3DR-CVR cockpit voice recorders to Lynx Mk 3, 7 and 8, Puma HC1 and Gazelle AH Mk1 helicopters, together with area microphones, connectors and cabling. SES was selected following international competition for the contract.
Deliveries will take place between March and May 2006.
Cockpit voice recorders are installed principally to record voice traffic in an aircraft cockpit, from sources including aircrew intercom, air traffic control and ambient noise within the cockpit, monitored using an area microphone.
They provide data which can be crucial in air accident investigation for reconstructing circumstances leading to air incidents.
Although new military air platforms are usually fitted with comprehensive health and usage monitoring systems (HUMS) which include the functionality of CVRs, some parts of the airborne fleet, especially those with shorter term out-of-service dates, have no CVR capability.
SES will supply its CVRs to provide this.
Until now, cost has been a significant deterrent to retrofitting CVR into existing aircraft, where none was fitted as original equipment.
Recent developments in memory cost versus capacity and an innovative approach have enabled SES to define a new standard for affordability in capable CVR and flight data recorders that exactly meets the needs of the Lynx Integrated Project Team (IPT) responsible for this combined procurement.
Mark Mabin, Managing Director of SES, commenting on the contract said: 'We are delighted to have been awarded this contract, the latest in a series of successes with leading-edge recording products'.
'I attribute our success in securing the contract to our focus on combining capability with affordability, which allows us to equip a whole fleet with CVR at a cost comparable with some individual HUMS installations'.
