Single-fibre laser produces 600W
Southampton Photonics and the Optoelectronics Research Centre at the University of Southampton have demonstrated over 600W from a single-fibre laser
Southampton Photonics and the optoelectronics Research Centre(ORC), University of Southampton, UK, have demonstrated over 600Wfrom a single fibre laser. These results, which the team believesto be the highest powers reported to date with a single fibregain module, demonstrate that cladding pumped fibre lasers canproduce the high powers needed to compete with more traditionallaser technology, in applications such as remote welding, byoffering high powers which preserve beam quality.

Fibre laser claims record output power
Southampton Photonics and the University of Southampton's Optoelectronics Research Centre have produced more than 1kW output in a high-quality beam from a single-fibre laser
These resultsare included in a presentation this week by SPI at the CLEOEurope conference.
The team led by Dr Johan Nilsson produced over600W output power at 1090nm from an ytterbium-doped fibre laser(YDFL).
Ytterbium-doped fibre lasers are among the most efficientlasers available.

According to SPI's roadmap, single-fibre,single-mode output powers well in excess of 1kW will be achievedin the not too distant future.
These lasers can then be combinedto produce multi-kilowatt solutions with excellent beam quality, efficiency and reliability.
The work was funded by the DefenseAdvanced Research Projects Agency under its High Power FibreLaser programme.
David Parker, SPI's CEO, commented:'This result is another example of how SPI is developingscaleable fibre laser designs and architectures, from the 100Wfibre laser products that we are offering today to the kilowattfibre lasers we will be delivering in the near future.
Thesefibre lasers reflect SPI's execution to our roadmap ofdelivering advanced, manufacturable fibre laser technology to ourOEMs'.
