It is a little known fact that three of Europe's top five most highly funded semiconductor startups this year are from the South West. Yet this huge investment along with the fact that the region has a cluster of semiconductor design companies of world class significance working on applications such as mobile phones, basestations and digital televisions, is rarely acknowledged outside the region. In order to raise the profile of these successes in the global marketplace the South West of England Regional Development Agency has invited the internationally renowned industry analyst Will Strauss to tour the region.

Strauss is considered the leading authority on digital signal processing (DSP) trends and is also an authority on semiconductors for the wireless, audio and VoIP markets.

During his time in the South West he will visit a number of companies to share his expertise and assess how the region compares with other international markets.

He will also attend a dinner with a large number of Chief Executives from the region, where the way forward for the sector in the region will be discussed.

Dafydd Williams from the South West of England Regional Development Agency said: 'We hope that this visit will highlight to Will Strauss the global significance of this sector in the region and that he in turn will raise the profile of the region through his activities in the US and international markets'.

'The sector gains by raising its profile internationally which is important for gaining more investment either from the venture capital community or through foreign direct investment'.

'Companies will benefit by gaining exposure to an industry renowned analyst'.

'A strong and growing sector regionally means that companies will be able to retain their skilled labour and importantly attract additional skilled labour to the regional economy'.

The visit coincides with the latest seminar to be held by SETsquared, a university group that helps startup technology companies.

Strauss will be speaking at the event along with semiconductor academics and investors and the UK chief of mobile phone leaders, Samsung.

Simon Bond of SETsquared said: 'The growing awareness of our capabilities in semiconductors is really playing to our region's strengths and the SETsquared business incubators are seeing more startups in this sector as a result'.

'We're committed to helping this regional phenomenon to grow and flourish on the world stage'.

The visit is part of a longer term campaign by the RDA to promote the region's integrated circuits (IC) industry.

By promoting the strength that is already in the region and encouraging the sector to come together to direct its future the RDA hopes it will lead to greater success for the IC sector in the South West and the region's economy in general.
