During the Nepcon UK show in Birmingham, Peter Swanson announced this year's SMART Fellow awards

The SMART Fellowships were first announced at the European Surface Mount Conference held in Brighton back in 1998. SMART Fellowships are awarded to individuals to 'thank them for their active participation in the furtherance of the aims of the SMART Group' during the year. The list includes committee members, supporters and sponsors, people who have helped the Group through the media, and those who are aiding the electronics manufacturing industry.

The list also includes SMART members who are regular delegates or extraordinary contributors to the association's seminars, forums and events.

Since the group began the SMART Fellows, there have been over 60 recipients.

The SMART Fellows are voted on by the Directors of the SMART Group, from a list of nominations suggested by the membership as a whole.

SMART Fellows for 2006 are as follows: John Burke, Optichron; Frances Coughlan, Kostal Ireland; Roger Deakin, BAE (Insyte); Ron Gow, DKL Metals; Jane Griffin, SMART Group; Marion Quarrington, Measurement Technology; and Pete Starkey, Starkey Technical Services.
