Labelling solutions provider Silver Fox has commissioned research to establish the true comparative costs of preparing cable and patch panel labelling for real-world projects when using software-based tools compared with dedicated printing machines. Three leading handheld dedicated cable label printers were reviewed, and compared against the costs and time taken by creating the same labels off-site using the Silver Fox Labacus Innovator package which prints out the labels, onto top-quality resilient label sheets, using a standard laser printer. With Silver Fox Labacus the operator has the luxury of preparing all the labels on his or her normal office computer and then producing them on his standard office laser printer.
All the correctly numbered labels can then be taken to site for easy application to the cables, patch panels and wall outlets.
The research indicated that in a typical 10,000-port installation, the cheapest and simplest of the dedicated printers was estimated to take 197 hours to produce all the project labels required.
The most sophisticated of the dedicated printers would have taken around 81 hours.
The same job done with the Silver Fox Labacus package would have taken 1.6 hours, a staggering 98% improvement on time.
Managing Director of Silver Fox, Nick Michaelson, commented: 'Handheld cable printers may look cheap but they are a false economy for anything beyond the most trivial of labelling jobs'.
'When everything was taken into account, the real cost improvement delivered by automating the process on your standard PC is between 60 and 80%'.
