International Rectifier has a new series of 600V non-punch-through (NPT) IGBTs housed in the TO-220 fully-isolated (Full-Pak) package with a guaranteed minimum isolation of 2kV. The new devices are copackaged with IR's new generation ultra-fast, soft recovery diodes, manufactured with IR's thin wafer technology. The new process enables increased electrical and thermal performance, delivering lower conduction loss without increased switching loss.

The new IGBTs are a part of the IR iMotion family of integrated design platforms for motion control.

The new devices can operate up to 175C junction temperature, increasing the standard operational range by 20% compared with similar products.

Modulation frequencies up to 20kHz are possible with these new IGBTs, enabling better torque control at lower speeds as well as reduced audible noise.

Typical applications for the new NPT IGBTs include variable-speed appliance motor drives in clothes washers, air conditioners and motorised industrial machinery up to 2.5 kW.

The new IGBTs have 10us short-circuit ratings, making them ideal for hard-starting, high-inrush-current motor drive circuits.

The new devices are guaranteed with a "square" reverse bias safe operating area (RBSOA) up to 175C for enhanced avalanche energy ratings (ruggedness).

Current ratings available include 8, 10 and 15A.

The new IGBTs do not require negative bias for turn-off, simplifying the use of gate driver ICs.

When combined with IR gate driver ICs, such as the IR2106 and IR2108 (half-bridge) or IR2136 (three-phase) families, the design of new electronic motor drives is greatly simplified.

Alberto Guerra, International Rectifier Director for Integrated Power Module, Consumer and Industrial Business Unit, said: "The new NPT IGBTs simplify and enhance variable-speed motor drive circuits, yet have the ruggedness and efficiency needed for energy-conserving appliances and light industrial applications".

The new NPT IGBTs are available now.

Pricing begins at US $0.63 each for the IRGIB7B60KD in 10,000-unit quantities.
