International Rectifier has developed two new microelectronic relays (MERs) to replace electromechanical relays in scientific instrumentation, PLCs, indicators and industrial automation

International Rectifier has developed two new microelectronic relays (MERs) to replace electromechanical relays in scientific instrumentation, programmable logic controllers, indicators and industrial automation. The new PVN013 and PVG613 MERs have off-state leakage current of 10nA, which is up to 99% lower than similar devices on the market.

Lower leakage current reduces measurement errors in electronic instrumentation and eliminates most unnecessary current-fault shutdown conditions due to leakage current in safety control circuits.

As a result, designers can reduce the circuitry required to offset excessive leakage current.

IR's PVN013 and PVG613 are single-pole, normally open solid-state relays.

They use a novel integrated circuit photovoltaic generator and HEXFET power mosfets as the output switch.

The PVN013 has an off-state leakage current of 10nA at 16V DC and the PVG613 has off-state leakage current of 10nA at 48V DC.

Requiring as little as 3 to 5mA to actuate, the PVN013 and PVG613 offer up to five times more sensitivity than typical 5V-coil electromechanical relays.

Because of this increased sensitivity, the MERs are directly CMOS- or TTL-compatible, and do not require open collector or buffer stage drive circuits.

In addition, the devices are over 40% smaller than subminiature electromechanical relays, and consume up to 95% less power than typical electromechanical relays.

The smaller size, simpler drive circuits and low power consumption enable sleeker designs and longer battery life in portable instrumentation.

The PVN013 is the smallest relay that can switch up to 4.5A DC-only and 2.5A AC/DC at voltages up to 20V.

The load current capacity of 4.5A is about five times higher than competing products in the same form factor.

The PVG613 provides switching performance at up to 2A of DC-only and up to 1A AC/DC load current at voltages up to 60V.

IR's new MERs have as much as five times lower on-resistance than reed relays.

Unlike electromechanical relays where contact resistance degrades over time, MERs retain low contact resistance throughout their lifetime.

Furthermore, the new MERs are immune to 'wear and tear' and have a typical estimated lifetime of over 10 billion operations, compared to a typical lifetime of between 100 thousand to 10 million operations for electromechanical or reed relays under similar load conditions.

Both MERs have 4kV AC isolation voltage, compared to 1.5kV AC for typical electromechanical or reed relays.

This high isolation voltage enables higher safety margins that meet stringent electrical safety regulations around the world with a single design.
