Oversizing electrical and electronic components to allow for derating at extremes of temperature is a costly exercise but, in many applications, the expense and inconvenience associated with derating can be avoided by using the latest Clima software package, which is available free-of-charge from Sarel. Clima software helps designers to accurately and easily predict the thermal performance of enclosures of all types, and provides immediate recommendations for effective thermal management. In many instances, this means that equipment mounted within the enclosure can be designed around smaller and less costly components than would have been needed had no thermal management strategy been implemented.

To ensure easy and speedy availability, the Clima software is available for immediate download from the Sarel website.

The package itself is a 4.6Mbyte file, and is complemented by a separate 370Kbyte file, also available from the downloads page of the Sarel website, which contains a detailed manual in the popular Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) format.

The Clima software package, which runs under Windows 95/98, guides users through a simple data entry process relating to the enclosure, its contents and the ambient conditions, then rapidly produces thermal management recommendations.

Once data for a project has been entered, it can be stored for recording and reporting purposes, or for use as the basis for further calculations.

To ensure that it is fast and easy to use, Clima is pre-programmed with details of the most popular mild-steel, stainless-steel, GRP and plastic enclosures from the Sarel range, and also with typical dissipation figures for commonly used components, such as relays, thermal overloads and contactors.

Users may, however, enter their own data for both enclosures and components, to be used as the basis of Clima's calculations.
