Compact Li-ion battery
backs up basestations
The Intensium lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery can deliver 3kW of backup power from a 1U high rack-mounted, hot-pluggable unit
The Intensium battery has been optimised to provide the ideal source of safe, reliable and zero maintenance backup power for the new generation of micro base transceiver stations (Micro-BTS) in wireless telecomms networks. Intensium batteries are also expected to find many other telecomms applications, such as Macro-BTS, ONU (Optical Node Units), HFC (hybrid fibre coax) and equipment on customer premises.

Micro-BTS installations, which are mainly located in urban areas with a range of hundreds of metres, represent a particularly demanding application for backup batteries due to the constraints on space and weight as well as elevated operating temperatures.
Saft has met this challenge by exploiting the exceptional power and energy density of its established lithium-ion technology to create a new battery that delivers the same performance as conventional VRLA (valve regulated lead-acid batteries), but in a package which is a quarter of the size and weight.
The compact nature of the Intensium battery has enabled it to be condensed into a self-contained rack-mounted unit, with a 3kW battery (Intensium 3000) occupying the height of a single rack unit (1U) within a standard 19in ETSI rack.
A 1.5kW (Intensium 1500) battery occupies a half-width unit.
This approach means that, when installed, the battery can be handled just like any other plug-and-play rack-mount equipment, and offers unprecedented flexibility for plant design - with no need for a dedicated battery area in the cabinet, and its high-temperature operating capability eliminates the need for an air conditioned environment.

Unlike conventional batteries, the Intensium Li-ion requires no maintenance.
The Intensium battery features Saft MP (medium prismatic) cells with proven completely sealed cobalt-based Li-ion technology.
This small, flat rechargeable cell offers an ideal combination of light weight, small size, high power and operational reliability, with an extended lifetime even at high ambient temperatures.
It has a 5-year life at a constant +40C, a10-year life at a constant +30C and can operate at temperatures up to +60C.
Two strings of 14 MP 176065 HD cells (the largest size in the MP range) are connected in parallel to create a nominal 48V battery, providing a constant 3kW over a 5min period.
Saft has optimised the Intensium to backup mains power failures of up to 20min.
In environments where Micro-BTS are located, mains power failures are usually short.
So 3kW for 5min is the nominal duration which allows the system to bridge-up power during the first minutes of power failure, and to bring the Micro-BTS to a clean standby mode in case of a longer failure.
The Intensium battery system is scalable, allowing it to grow as operating conditions change, with up to four batteries connected in parallel to provide 12 kW of backup power.
Intensium is a plug and play battery system complete with integrated BPCU (battery protection and communication unit) fuse and power switch.
Visual indications such as LEDs and remote communication (CANbus, dry-contact) interfaces supply information on state of charge, state of health, alarm levels and operating conditions such as voltage and temperature.
The Intensium concept places a major emphasis on safety with a five-level redundant safety design in case of component failure or abusive conditions.
This includes an electronic board at the battery system level, a separate electronic board at the seven-cell pack level and an intrinsically safe design at three levels on every single cell with a current breaker, shutdown-effect separator and mechanical vent.
Intensium has been developed in close partnership with major telecom OEMs and operators.
Its design builds upon Saft's wealth of experience in the design, manufacture and supply of Li-ion based rechargeable battery systems for a wide variety of demanding roles in aerospace, defence and civil applications.
Manufacturing is carried out on long-established, high-output production lines.
