Broadline distribution specialist Rutronik Elektronische Bauelemente has begun the year with a new face on the web. The new-look Rutronik website is entirely in keeping with the company's European branding and is clearly structured to reflect the company's consultancy, support, components and logistics services. At the heart of the Internet presentation lies the new 'webgate' Internet portal, which, with a single login, allows customers to access the three main sections: online catalogue, procurement with tracking system and product change notifications (or PCNs for short).
The online catalogue provides an overview of all the products supplied by Rutronik along with detailed datasheets.
It lets users search according to technical parameters - unique in this form among other search engines.
In the field of electronic components, a search can produce several thousand hits for certain search strings.
The precise description or narrowing down of the definition simplifies searches for products immensely and results in a far more specific selection.
The catalogue is instantly accessible after a one-off registration.
The PCN database contains all notifications relating to product changes and discontinuation announcements including the original reports of the manufacturers.
Particularly with regard to the RoHS Directive, this information provides valuable assistance in product planning.
This database is also accessed by a single login.
The procurement function is primarily aimed at existing customers, who, by using the tracking system, can trace their orders conveniently online.
It provides information about order status, delivery dates and contracts in addition to providing an overview of completed and open orders.
For security reasons, customers must perform a one-off activation procedure before using this service by the Rutronik customer service.
Rutronik regards its e-commerce offering as an information pool and valuable additional service within the daily distribution business.
The prime focus is still on providing personal customer advice via the distribution department and FAEs, particularly with regard to system/application development.
'Our online catalogue already got off to a flying start at last year's Embedded World and proved highly popular amongst our customers'.
'This has revealed that the demand for web-based purchasing concepts is truly vast'.
'It confirmed our strategy of further extending our e-commerce line in parallel to providing customer support on site and of helping our customers optimise their business processes with our webgate', explained Thomas Rudel, Director of Distribution and Marketing at Rutronik.
