Two new melody ringer ICs feature pulse-code-modulated (PCM) sound generators that can produce 32- or 16-note polyphonic sounds simultaneously

Ideal for increasingly multifunctional mobile phones, the new LSI devices are capable of reproducing high fidelity original sounds with pure and clear quality. The new BU8788KN (32-note) and BU8793KN (16-note) ICs incorporate an ADPCM decoder, which can be used for both voice data, and to record sounds for use as a ringing tone.

A multiplexer is included for superimposing voice on polyphonic sounds, while the devices' stereo playback outputs address the need for listening to music via headphones.

Rohm's new ICs are capable of generating 128 tones, 47 drum-set sounds and 32 effects sounds.

A built in sequencer and FIFO buffer significantly eases the burden on the CPU.

Additionally, the sequencer itself can control the music output and timing by sending the melody data to the FIFO.

Both the new devices feature a stereo sound DAC and a CPU interface.

Pitch bending and tremolo are provided to add subtle expressions to the sounds, while an integrated secondary low pass filter is used for smoothing.

Each device is compliant with the general MIDI (GM) level 1 set of timbres which is the same format used by MIDI audio sources in general electronic musical instruments.

The new BU8793KN IC is supplied in a QFN28V package measuring 5.2 x 5.2 x 1.0mm and offers CPU control via a serial interface.

The BU8788KN features a QFN36V package with dimensions of 6.2 x 6.2 x 0.8mm and allows CPU control through both serial and parallel interfaces.

Supply voltage for both of the new ICs is rated from 2.7 to 3.6V, and operating temperature ranges are from -25 to +85C for the BU8793KN and from -40 to +85C in the case of the BU8788KN.
