Remploy Electronics has created a strategic purchasing team as part of a wide-ranging reorganisation of the contract manufacturing group's buying activities. The team will be led by Purchasing Manager, Dave Walker, and Buyer, Helen Maude. The new structure is designed to improve customer service as well as increasing cost efficiency.
Under the revised structure component spending across Remploy Electronics' five UK manufacturing sites will be consolidated.
Previously the sites purchased autonomously and spending was not co-ordinated to maximise buying power.
The number of suppliers has also been reduced; a move that has resulted in the twin benefits of enabling faster quotation turnaround and increasing the level of support obtained from the remaining suppliers.
Aled Williams, Remploy Electronics' Operations Manager, described the advantages of the change: 'Remploy now has a centralised team that combines the technical and commercial skills essential for the effective buying of electronic components'.
'As materials account for approximately 70% of the cost of a typical PCB, the purchasing function is at the heart of a successful contract manufacturing business'.
The combination of a smaller supplier roster and Remploy's success in attracting larger contracts has also helped develop stronger supplier relationships.
The Remploy team can now draw on a supply base with in depth technical knowledge, enabling it to offer a variety of options to customers as required.
For customers who require EDI links, Remploy can provide a full supply chain capability.
In addition to increasing overall efficiency this can also remove a significant amount of time from the delivery process.
