Rohde and Schwarz has developed an optional hardware decoder for the R and S DVM family.

It decodes the video and audio signals contained in the transport stream, allowing users to quickly identify the programmes and to immediately view and assess their picture quality.

The new decoder is suitable for both the SDTV and HDTV formats.

In addition to MPEG-2, it supports the H.264 coding standard.

By means of the buffer analysis function, you can additionally test signals to determine whether they are in accordance with the MPEG standard.

The new option is available for all instrument types of the R and S DVM MPEG-2 measurement platform.

Various displays for picture display can be connected via numerous interfaces, including the HDMI interface, which will play an important role in future.

The R and S DVM400 digital video measurement system already includes a screen for displaying the graphical user interface.

The decoded picture can also be directly shown on the display.

With the new decoder, all models of the DVM family additionally feature an on-screen display (OSD) function that gives you an informative and a quick overview of the technical characteristics of the signal.

The video and audio signals of a program are decoded at the same time.

The decoder supports MPEG-2 and H.264 for video signals and all common formats from MPEG-1 layer II to Dolby Digital for audio signals.

The real-time buffer analysis function checks whether the video and audio signals have been coded in line with the standard.

Users can analyse whether transport, multiplex and element buffers comply with the MPEG standard.

The video buffer verifier model, the leak method and the hypothetical reference decoder defined in the standard are supported.

As the measurement results are graphically displayed, they can be interpreted quickly and easily.

The instruments of the R and S DVM family are an ideal choice for network operators (satellite, cable and terrestrial), operators of playout centres, system integrators and monitoring authorities.

And, the high-end R and S DVM400 version is ideal for R and D applications.

In addition to many other functions, all R and S DVM instruments and the buffer analysis function are available from Rohde and Schwarz.

The decoder option will be available from Rohde and Schwarz as of November 2006.
