The Federal Office for Information Management and Information Technology of the German Armed Forces has commissioned Rohde and Schwarz to carry out a study into software defined radio (SDR).

As one of the world's leading manufacturers of software radios, Rohde and Schwarz will conduct preparatory tests for the German Armed Forces' next generation of radio systems.

The demand for networked and high-security radiocommunications is steadily increasing.

At the same time, the requirements with respect to the interoperability of the German Armed Forces in joint missions as well as in combined multinational missions are becoming more and more stringent.

Future voice and data connections within network centric warfare (NCW) therefore require self-organising, mobile radio networks with suitable transmission methods.

These next-generation software defined radios are used as network nodes and also as terminals with loadable, adaptive, narrowband and wideband waveforms.

In future, these radios will form the backbone of the mobile section in the communications system for all organisational divisions of the German Armed Forces on missions within the country.

The study will analyse and demonstrate new technologies and will define the basis for the future joint radio systems of the German Armed Forces (SVFuA).

The task of these systems will be to securely distribute and transmit command-relevant information during missions.

The result of the study will be concepts and demonstrators with integrated radio and network capabilities.
