RFI Cellular, part of RFI Global Services, has launched its Chipset Vendor Programme. This new initiative is expected to reduce testing times and noncompliances for handset manufacturers by increasing the quality of reference designs. It represents a fundamental shift in the services that compliance laboratories have traditionally provided and is part of RFI's strategy to develop new services at all levels of protocol stack development.

By entering the design cycle at the chipset design stage, RFI believes that it will reduce the design and development time of 'first time' compliant handsets through improved confidence levels of chipset vendors in their offering.

Handset manufacturers will benefit directly, chipsets that have been developed in consultation with RFI will require less testing and the numbers of first time compliant product are expected to rise.

Richard Jacklin, Director and Head of Cellular explained: 'We are rolling out services and creating test tools that will meet the demands for all the layers in the protocol stack including the application/user layer'.

'We want to be able to offer our customers in the cellular industry a complete service'.

'Traditionally we have focused on Layers 1-3, the physical, data and core intelligence layers'.

'We believe that there is a need for RFI's test and compliance expertise at all levels of protocol stack design and development, and that we are the first to introduce these'.

By developing close working relationships with chipset vendors, RFI will be able to support their handset manufacturing customer bases to an even greater degree.

The program gives chipset vendors regular access to testing to verify software releases and includes valuable feedback and tracking of any reference design issues.

In return, RFI has access to their platforms yielding considerable understanding of their designs.

This improved familiarity significantly benefits the handset manufacturer through improved support levels and greater awareness of platform issues.
