On Monday 19th December, representatives from Recycling.co.uk visited the Stockport based offices of the Children's Safety Education Foundation to deliver a donation of six fully refurbished, Internet-ready computer systems to the charity's Chief Executive, John McNamee. Computer-Recycling.co.uk, a division of Recycling.co.uk, refurbished and prepared the computers for delivery. Recycling.co.uk's Business Development Team, Dave Allen and June Armstrong arranged the donation to help support the foundation's valuable work, and to demonstrate that the re-use and recycling of ICT hardware make sense from both a commercial and environmental perspective.

The computers - standard Pentium PIII PCs with between 20 and 30Gbyte hard drives - were delivered complete with 17in monitors, CD-ROM drives, keyboards, mice and other peripherals.

They will now be used to update the facilities for CSEF's administration staff, who had previously been using dated computers that were becoming increasingly unreliable.

John McNamee, Chief Executive of the Foundation said: 'We would like to express our sincere thanks to all at Recycling.co.uk for their kind donation'.

'These computers will make a significant difference to our administrative capability; they operate faster and have more memory than those we currently use to register school requirements for educational material, to collect donors' details and perform general administrative duties'.

'Here, at the foundation, we are becoming increasingly dependent on technology to improve efficiencies'.

'This support will further our efforts to fulfil our primary objective, which is to reach as many children as possible with safety education resources'.

'The advancement of e-mail and the Internet as communication tools require modern hardware and this donation will enable us to communicate more effectively with our stakeholders'.

All parts of the donated computer systems originally came to Computer Recycling as part of its recycling contracts with local authorities and commercial organisations, under which the company ensures that any unwanted, damaged or outdated ICT hardware is disposed of by the most environmentally responsible means.

'We take computer equipment from a large number of public bodies and from businesses of all sizes', explains Dave Allen.

'Damaged machines are recycled so we can recover all the key constituents including glass, plastic and metals, while working equipment is prepared for refurbishment and subsequent sale and re-use'.

'In this case, we were keen to support the work of the Children's Safety Education Foundation, so we selected a number of good quality PCs and our technicians used them to build six fully refurbished systems, which I am sure the Foundation will put to very good use'.

Typically, Computer Recycling handles systems that are around two or three years old, which customers have recently replaced.

Consequently, many of them are perfectly functional computers that are very stable and ideal for routine office work.

Prior to the re-use of any PC, all data are erased from the hard drive using a process that meets stringent MoD security standards.

Once the testing process is complete, the majority of the company's refurbished computer systems are then sold into export markets.

Based in the North West, the Recycling.co.uk group is a leading materials reclamation specialist and, in addition to computer equipment, its various divisions also process end of life vehicles, plastics, metals and a range of waste electrical and electronic equipment in line with the latest environmental legislation.
