Renesas Technology Europe and MPC Data have developed Embedded Linux distributions tailored for development boards for SuperH microprocessors such as the SH7705, SH7751R and SH7760. This includes a major update of the Linux support website, www.shlinux.com, which MPC Data operates on behalf of Renesas Technology Europe to provide downloadable board support packages and technical support for Linux running on Renesas EDOSK and SystemH development platforms. MPC Data provides Embedded Linux distributions tailored for Renesas development boards.
These include prebuilt binaries, documentation and full source code.
Each board support package (BSP) consists of a precompiled toolchain, a bootloader, a precompiled kernel and a disk image.
Software integration support is provided either as a free email service or as a paid service for custom software integration development, training and consultancy.
Following on from the success of the EDOSK7705 platform, support has been added for the SystemH7751R, EDOSK7751R and EDOSK7760.
In addition, the Embedded Linux distributions have been enhanced to provide a TFTP bootloader, Flash, USB, and video support for the EDOSK7705.
"We have seen an increasing interest from our customers to use Linux as operating system of choice for embedded applications", said Carsten Wild, Product Marketing Engineer, SuperH Systems Group at Renesas Technology.
"However, the lack of confidence to implement Linux successfully and cost-effectively into complex embedded applications has, until now, proved a hindrance for Linux to reach its full potential.
By providing ready-to-use BSPs with an integrated support structure provided by MPC Data, the development of products based on Embedded Linux becomes easy and uncomplicated".
Graham Anstey, Senior Consultant at MPC Data added: "Linux has always been rejected due to a perceived lack of support from suppliers.
What developers require is a source of help as and when they need it.
Through www.shlinux.com, MPC Data provides the SuperH developer community with this knowledge at their fingertips, 24 hours a day".
