New from PMC-Sierra, the PM8356 QuadPHY FC is a Fibre Channel serdes device for the storage area networking (SAN) market. To address the growing market opportunities for 1.0625 or 2.125Gbit/s multiport transceivers in Fibre Channel switches, PMC-Sierra has leveraged its high-speed low-power 0.18-micron CMOS serdes technology to address Fibre Channel system performance requirements. The new, fully redundant, four-channel QuadPHY FC incorporates programmable pre-emphasis, receive equalisation and integrates external passive components.

The QuadPHY FC solution provides system vendors with increased signal integrity, up to 80% power savings, up to 70% board area reduction and reduced overall system cost, while addressing the emerging 2G Fibre Channel class of networked storage equipment.

"Our move into the SAN market continues PMC-Sierra's expansion into the growing Enterprise-IT market segment", said Mark Stibitz, vice president and general manager of PMC-Sierra's Enterprise and Storage Division.

"Our multiport CMOS serdes devices have been designed into multiple customer systems to date, including some of the most demanding and highest volume gigabit serdes sockets in the enterprise switch segment.

The QuadPHY FC device extends our capability into storage network applications".

The QuadPHY FC is ideal for both Fibre Channel transceivers and serial backplane applications.

The device increases overall SAN performance with four independent, rate selectable, bidirectional 1.0625 or 2.125Gbit/s Fibre Channel ports to an ANSI standard Fibre Channel high-speed parallel interface (FC-HSPI).

Integrated capabilities include serialiser/deserialiser, clock recovery, clock synthesis, byte alignment logic and internal pattern generator/comparator for system test and diagnostics.

For mission-critical storage systems, the QuadPHY FC offers a fully redundant architecture to provide working and protect high-speed differential links.

Maximum signal integrity performance over a wide range of applications is provided through programmable pre-emphasis, receive equalisation and integrated receive/transmit termination and capacitive coupling.

PMC-Sierra is an active member of the Fibre Channel Industry Association and is helping to shape the direction of Fibre Channel technology for reliable storage area networks.

The PM8356 QuadPHY FC, quad 1.0625 and 2.125 Gbit/s Fibre Channel transceiver will be available for volume shipments in Q4, 2002.

Packaged in a small 23 x 23mm footprint, thermally enhanced 324-pin PBGA, the device is suited to a wide temperature range.
