PLX Technology is demonstrating at the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference its revolutionary new cabling connectivity technology, PLX USB Duet

PLX Technology is demonstrating at the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) its revolutionary new cabling connectivity technology, PLX USB Duet. The reference-design demonstration highlights how, with USB Duet technology, two laptop computers running the Microsoft Windows XP or Vista operating systems can be connected through a standard USB cable - no network switch, hub or router is needed - and transfer data at up to 480Mbit/s.

USB Duet's simplicity, minimal hardware requirements and Windows support enable two or more PCs to use USB to quickly and economically share files and transfer disk drives' contents when upgrading PCs.

The technology also allows a USB Duet-enabled PC to back up files by using another computer as a secondary storage device.

Although the WinHEC demonstration illustrates how USB Duet technology excels in laptop environments - it draws under 1uW of standby power - it can be integrated with the PCIbus of any PC platform; computers ranging from ultramobile PCs (UMPCs) to full desktop systems can be designed with the technology, eliminating the need for costly and cumbersome networking equipment.

'USB has the natural ability to move data at high transfer rates, and PLX developed a way to harness its speed so that laptop, desktop and UMPC users can take advantage of USB for both conventional purposes and new applications', said Jimmy Chou, USB Product Marketing Manager at PLX.

'One of the most common complaints among new laptop buyers, for example, is the daunting task of transferring files from the old machine to the new one, which is one of the foremost problems solved with USB Duet technology'.

USB Duet technology is based on the PLX NET2280, a programmable peripheral controller optimised for fast data transfer between the PCI and USB buses.

Fully compliant with the Hi-Speed USB 2.0 and PCI 3.0 specifications, and available in a small 8 x 8 x 1mm FPBGA package, the NET2280 is ideal as an interface for intelligent USB 2.0 peripherals using PCI as the internal or local bus.

PLX's robust application programming interface (API) for USB Duet technology - for Windows XP, Windows Vista and Linux environments - empowers developers to create a wide range of USB applications such as mass storage, systems free of RS232 and serial ports, remote network driver interface specification designs, and other USB-class and vendor-specific functions.

With this API, no USB hardware knowledge is required.
