Philips has now sold 15 million hybrid analogue/digital TV tuner chips, accounting for over 30% of the total number of tuner chips sold worldwide since 2003

Philips' advanced versatile hybrid tuner chips meet the various worldwide standards for both analogue and digital devices. This integration simplifies the design process by combining both functionalities in a single chip. By reducing the amount of discrete components manufacturers can easily and more cost-effectively introduce new digital TV (DTV) devices, cable/terrestrial tuners and set-top boxes (STBs) with faster time to market.

According to IMS Research, sales for cable, terrestrial and satellite STBs are expected to grow from 50.8 million units shipped in 2004 to 90.3 million in 2009.

The analyst firm attributes this growth to the wider adoption of digital television services around the world.

With Philips' hybrid tuner ICs meeting the worldwide standards for DTV and STBs, it enables manufacturers to deliver devices with both digital and analogue signals, which is demanded by today's connected consumer for current and future digital devices.

'We designed our hybrid tuner ICs to meet all of the worldwide standards, positioning the company to ride the explosive wave of new and exciting devices in the digital entertainment domain', said Julian Humphreys, Vice President of Marketing, TV Systems at Philips Semiconductors.

'This versatility has made our tuners a top choice for major TV, DVD and STB manufacturers'.
