Philips is to incorporate a high-performance Java 2 Platform Micro Edition (J2ME) implementation in its industry leading Nexperia cellular system solution for 2.5G cellular devices. Philips will work together with Smart Fusion, a leading vendor of Java technology wireless applications, to incorporate a J2ME implementation based on Sun Microsystems' Connected Limited Device Configuration HotSpot Implementation (CLDC HotSpot). This will allow handset manufacturers to support richer content capabilities and enable network operators to build compelling services.
Sun Microsystems ' CLDC HotSpot Implementation is designed for next generation devices - its small footprint and more efficient use of processing power are optimised for services requiring high performance such as entertainment and banking applications in handsets.
Users of devices powered by the Java technology enabled system solution will be able to customise the handset's look and feel and download and swap applications of their choice.
"We are currently experiencing considerable demand from manufacturers for Java technology based solutions", commented Steve Jones, President and CEO at Smart Fusion.
"By providing consumer electronics vendors and OEMs with J2ME implementation fully integrated into Philips' Nexperia Cellular System Solution, we allow them to concentrate on product differentiation rather than integration, improving time to market without sacrificing innovative technologies.
End users will ultimately benefit from secure, feature rich applications and high levels of customisation.
Smart Fusion is presently the only independent software vendor licensee of CLDC HotSpot".
"The Philips and Smart Fusion integration of J2ME technology - and specifically of CLDC HotSpot Implementation - into a proven and successful Nexperia cellular system solution will enable the widest possible audience to benefit from our technologies", commented Juan Dewar, Director, Strategic Solutions and Devices Business at Sun Microsystems.
"The solution will provide Philips' customer base with a cost-effective method of integrating a high performance J2ME implementation on mobile devices".
Philips' 2.5G Nexperia cellular system solution integrates the technology required to power a handset, including the RF, baseband, power amplifier, power management unit, display and communications protocol software.
In addition, Philips has developed a reference design, ready for production by handset manufacturers, which will greatly reduce integration costs and time to market.
The next-generation Nexperia cellular system solution will be available for mass production in 2003.
