Technological breakthrough in silicon tuners
Philips has developed a novel silicon tuner solution for consumer electronics applications
The IC allows equipment designers to remove sensitive and costly RF and filter parts from their designs, and combines the strength of both analogue and digital processing. The TDA8270 is the first silicon tuner to have fully integrated functionality for the cable market and opens up a new area for companies without extensive RF competence, through a revolutionary ease of application.

The TDA8270 is the first product in a new family of silicon tuners from Philips.
"Silicon tuners are one of the most important weapons in the arsenal of any semiconductor manufacturer wishing to offer solutions for the digital set-top-box market", said Paul O'Donovan, Senior Analyst with Gartner Dataquest.
Silicon tuners are used in consumer and commercial systems such as cable modems and cable set-top-boxes (STBs).
These devices support a variety of services including television and cable programming, video on demand (VoD), telephony and Internet access.

More and more services are being offered through the cable pipeline, resulting in a rapidly evolving, convergent market.
The vision of incorporating DVD, VCR, personal video recording (PVR), video on demand (VoD) and streaming Internet video functionality into one set-top box is a key feature of the connected home of tomorrow.
Philips' solution will enable the development of next-generation, digital STBs supporting voice, video and data services.
"The launch of this family of products demonstrates Philips' vision for the future - it is a major breakthrough, and part of our total system solution to speed up the march towards digital technology and the connected home", said Philippe Hermant, marketing manager of Media Access Solutions, Philips Semiconductors.
"On the basis of our world leadership in digital and analogue tuner IC solutions and with Philips' innovation in research combined with its business strength, we have succeeded in bringing a superior solution to the consumer market.
The TDA827x family of silicon tuners will allow new companies to enter the consumer electronics market, as well as enabling existing companies to strengthen their positions to provide information, communication and entertainment across an expanding range of applications".
Philips' solution will, in time, become the de-facto standard.
The launch of the TDA827x family will enable remarkable changes in the limits of size, weight, design and system cost.
This new family of products addresses all cable and terrestrial market sectors and has a long-term stable pin configuration and application.
The evolutionary roadmap is based on constant enhancement in terms of power efficiency, miniaturization and features.
Future-proof enhancements do not require application modifications and the silicon tuner has the ability to accommodate new market demands.
The TDA8270 is the first step in this long-term product roadmap with pin and application compatible evolution.
The tuner has no external selectivity and only very few, uncritical, external components, facilitating its design-in.
Together with the TDA8280 cable up-stream driver for return channel applications and the TDA8290, a new cost-effective Pal-NTSC demodulator for analogue TV compliance, the same silicon tuner can be used for a wide range of applications and functions including analogue compliance, out of band and personal video recording (PVR).
This all combines to enable a considerable shortening of the design cycle time and cost.
