The NCP144x series of 280 and 560kHz boost regulators offer design engineers low-cost power conversion solutions for a wide range of battery-operated applications

Each of the four new current-mode boost regulators features a 4A/40V integrated power switch that eliminates the need for an external FET - thus saving cost and board space. The flexibility of the design allows the parts to operate in most power supply configurations, including boost, flyback, forward, inverting and SEPIC.

Because the devices operate at voltages ranging from 2.7 to 30V, they accommodate numerous applications including test equipment, handheld meters, portable printers and computers and process control.

The high 280 or 560kHz operating frequencies allow the use of smaller passive components to save board space.

For added design flexibility, the NCP144x family can be synchronised with an external frequency source - up to 500kHz for the NCP1442 and NCP1443 and up to 1MHz for the NCP1444 and NCP1445.

A shutdown capability minimises battery drain by reducing the typical standby current draw to 12uA.

A comprehensive set of protection features provides added power distribution stability.

"The NCP144x devices are significant to the industry because they are functionally equivalent to competitive devices but offer up to 33% more output current together with very low standby current", said Andy Williams, ON Semiconductor director of Power Conversion Products.

"This feature set is in high demand for many battery operated and portable devices because it improves performance while conserving battery life".

ON Semiconductor is offering the NCP144x devices in a new low-profile Powerflex surface mount package that further conserves board space.

In the 7-lead Powerflex (a low profile D2PAK or SPAK) package the devices are $2.14 per unit in 10,000 unit quantities.

Also offered in the TO220-7 package, the NCP144x series is priced at $2.07 per unit in 10,000 unit quantities.
