Continuing to respond to designers' needs for smaller, more efficient and yet cost-effective power-management solutions, ON Semiconductor has released the NCP1207 - a pulsewidth modulated (PWM) current-mode controller with quasiresonant (QR) switching capability that reduces power consumption and component count. The NCP1207 incorporates all the necessary components and features needed to build a rugged and reliable switch-mode power supply (SMPS) with minimal external components. Ideal applications for the NCP1207 include AC/DC adapters for computer notebooks, offline battery chargers, and power supplies for consumer electronics such as televisions, DVD players, set top boxes and game boxes.

The NCP1207 QR design allows better efficiency compared with existing fixed frequency controllers and reduces the standby power level needed.

For example, the NCP1207 can reduce the standby power consumption of a 100W television power supply to less than 1W.

In a 12V wall adapter, the NCP1207 can increase power efficiency to above 90% - a considerable improvement over fixed-frequency solutions.

The QR design of the NCP1207 minimises electromagnetic interference and reduces switching losses.

An adjustable skip-mode capability under light loads minimises audible noise generation.

The high-voltage startup-current source offers a clean lossless startup sequence.

The NCP1207 is self-supplied from a 40 to 500V DC rail, and so requires no transformer auxiliary winding or associated passive components.

The NCP1207 also features comprehensive protection circuitry - including overvoltage protection, overcurrent protection and overtemperature shutdown.

The NCP1207 is offered in two space-saving packages - the 7.62 x 10mm PDIP-8 package and the 5 x 6.2mm SO-8 package.

Pricing is $0.55 per unit in 10,000 unit quantities for both package options.
