OBSAI, the Open Base Station Architecture Initiative, has been set up to invite companies to participate in defining and agreeing on open standards for the internal architecture and key interfaces of base stations and cellular networks. OBSAI has been moving on systematically achieving all its goals since last year and has announced a complete set of standards covering both interface and module specifications. The latest announcement completes the RF interface specifications offerings in relation to remote RF heads and extends OBSAI's current interfaces for the radio area.

OBSAI previously announced the availability of module specifications in August 2004, and internal interface specifications and the System Reference Document, for the Transport, Control, Baseband, and Radio modules in October 2003.

One of the benefits of all OBSAI specifications is that they are air interface agnostic and are compatible with WCDMA, CDMA and GSM/EDGE base stations.

The result is that wireless hardware manufacturers can develop standard products faster and more efficiently for a worldwide customer-base, which in turn allows mobile operators to rollout new services (3G, 4G and beyond) with a fraction of the capital expenditure usually required.

Below is a news alert that provides more detailed background on the availability of the latest version of the RF module interface specifications.
