Video chipset raises HDTV bandwidth

Applications for the Gennum HD-Linz III chipset include high-bandwidth transport, replacing dual-link HD-SDI, 3D HDTV, digital cinema and slow motion video capture

Nu Horizons Electronics has introduced a 2.97Gbit/s chipset for video applications in which standard HDTV formats offer insufficient fidelity and resolution. Growing demand for full high-definition (1080 vertical lines, 60Hz progressive scan) video is the main driver for higher serial digital interface (SDI) bandwidths.

The Gennum chipset, called HD-Linx III, comprises the GS2974A equaliser, GS2975A reclocker, and GS2978 cable driver.

Applications for the chipset include high-bandwidth transport, replacing dual-link HD-SDI, 3D HDTV, digital cinema and slow motion video capture.

HD-Linx III is backwards compatible with HD-SDI and legacy SD-SDI.

It offers improved performance in key areas such as jitter, power consumption and return loss.

The GS2974A is a multirate equaliser supporting datarates up to 2.97Gbit/s, it is pin compatible with the previous GS1574A HD/SD device.

The GS2975A is a trirate reclocker with dual output that supports 2.97Gbit/s, 1.485Gbit/s and 270Mbit/s datarates.

It is a pin-compatible upgrade to the GS1575B that operates with 40% less power, dual data outputs, and improved jitter performance for 1.5Gbit/s applications.

The GS2978 is a multi-rate cable driver supporting datarates up to 2.97Gbit/s.

It also has lower intrinsic jitter than previous solutions, as well as improved output return loss.

The GS2978 is backwardly compatible with the GS1578A and includes an optional disable pin for power savings.
