ECOC 2003 (the European Conference on Optical Communication) is set to become a truly global event this year. The conference is being held at Rimini in Italy from 21st to 25th September and is combined with IOOC - the international conference on integrated optics and optical fibre communication - which is held every two years and alternates between the USA, Asia and Europe. Interest in the associated exhibition has been so high that organiser Highbury-Nexus is introducing international pavilions for the first time.
"By Easter - almost six months before the exhibition begins - we already had 200 exhibitors and had sold over half of the exhibition space, which is very encouraging", said exhibition Marketing Manager Lucy Van Renselar.
"ECOC is a world event and this is being reflected by the strong interest from Europe and further afield".
Pavilions for French, Scottish and Canadian companies are already planned and others are expected, as well as a designated area for China, Korea and Taiwan.
"This is a very special year for ECOC because it is only once every six years that we have the chance to work on this very wide international basis, co-organised with our American and Asian-Australian colleagues.
This brings the size of the technical programme committee to 70 members", said ECOC 2003 Cochairman Bruno Costa.
"It is also very special to have the exhibition linked to the conference.
This gives delegates the opportunity to not only hear about the latest developments and techniques but to go and see for themselves what is being produced by the world's leading companies".
ECOC 2003 is being held at the Rimini Fiera in Rimini, Italy.
The conference is held from 21st to 25th September and the exhibition from 22nd to 24th September.
Included in this year's exhibition is "Liquid Europe", attracting investment bankers and venture capitalists, and an investors forum for CEOs new to ECOC.
