High-speed LVDS serialiser/deserialiser chipset serialises 24bit data over a single differential pair at a datarate of 1.03Gbit/s.

National Semiconductor has introduced a new high-speed LVDS serialiser/deserialiser (serdes) chipset that serialises 24bit data over a single differential pair (two wires) at a datarate of 1.03Gbit/s In addition, the serdes chipset features true embedded clock architecture and a unique random data lock feature

National's new serdes chipset is being demonstrated on Booth 506 in Hall A4, at the Electronica trade show in Munich, Germany.

Unlike other serdes chipsets that require the system designer to employ a second oscillator at the receiver, the DS90UR241 serialiser and DS90UR124 deserialiser chipset features true embedded clock architecture to receive data without burdening the system with a second oscillator.

This feature reduces system cost and simplifies system design by eliminating the need to match transmit and receive oscillator frequencies.

With the proliferation of flat panel displays into demanding new commercial, industrial and automotive applications, system architects need a robust, cost-effective method to drive high bandwidth video data over long distances.

By achieving 1Gbit/s of bandwidth over a single, low-cost differential pair, National's new DS90UR241 and DS90UR124 chipset enables high quality displays in a variety of applications, including automotive navigation and rear seat entertainment, point-of-sale (POS) terminals and industrial displays.

For demanding hot-plug applications, National's SerDes chipset also includes a unique random data lock feature that enables quick recovery from datastream disruptions caused by spurious electrical impulses or momentary mechanical disconnects.

While other serdes chipsets require a training session for the serialiser and deserialiser to achieve lock, National's serdes chipset locks quickly with any data pattern.

With additional features such as AC-coupling, at-speed BIST link diagnostics and programmable pre-emphasis to drive long cables, the DS90UR241 and DS90UR124 chipset is well-suited for demanding applications such as automotive navigation and infotainment systems.

The DS90UR241 and DS90UR124 chipset transmits and receives 24bit data over a single LVDS differential pair with embedded clock.

In addition to the low interconnect count, the chipset features AC coupling support of the LVDS differential pair and a pre-emphasis function that boosts signal strength for driving long cable distances.

Proprietary data encoding enables a DC-balanced bit stream over the serial link.

The DS90UR241 is offered in a 48-pin TQFP package and the DS90UR124 is offered in a 64-pin TQFP package.

The DS90UR241 is priced at US $6.60 and the DS90UR124 is $7.00 in 1000-unit quantities.
