Development kit speeds wireless prototyping: News from MaxStream

After a record-breaking year, MaxStream will release a new version of the XBee development kit that offers OEMs and systems integrators the ability to easily load their own code to the XBee and XBee-Pro RF module's processor. The XBee Professional Developer's Kit is ideal for applications that require a customised software configuration. 'There has been great demand from OEMs that want to develop and upload custom-designed code to the agency-approved XBee modules', said Nick Mecham, MaxStream's Vice President of Business Development.

'The XBee Professional Developer's Kit gives design engineers the ability to easily upload code and access the hardware capabilities of the XBee and XBee-Pro modules for wide variety of applications'.

'Because ZigBee has begun to take shape in so many markets, we don't want to limit OEMs strictly to industry-wide standards for software protocol'.

Included in the developer's kit is code and instructions for implementing either the Freescale/Figure8 ZigBee stack, Freescale SMAC or 802.15.4 firmware into custom tailored application code.

Also included are redesigned interface boards with additional switches and LEDs to make custom software design and configuration simpler.

Since its release in May, MaxStream has seen an increasing market demand for applications that either use the capabilities of the ZigBee standard or benefit from the low-cost, low-power wireless communications of the XBee product family.

The XBee Professional Developer's Kit will be available for purchase beginning in January.
