Electronica 2004 will offer the first European industry viewing of 3M Touch Systems' DST-based touch screens.

DST (dispersive signal technology) offers a fundamentally different approach to touch, recognising the point of contact through vibrations in the substrate, rather than the interruption of electrical fields, acoustic waves or infra-red light.

The 3M Touch Systems stand at Electronica will exhibit new touch screens based on DST, a completely new touch technology, and will include a demonstration of a 40in DST touch screen.

For the first time in one solution, dispersive signal technology incorporates the primary features offered by several touch technologies today - exceptional light transmission, stylus support, accuracy, signature capture and all-glass durability - along with many new capabilities like enhanced palm rejection, auto configuration and the ability to accommodate requests for various display sizes, such as 30 and 40in.

This patented solution will be compelling to customers in many of today's high productivity, vertical applications for touch, including retail, point of sale, finance, hospitality and gaming.

The DST principle was unveiled by 3M at SID in May 2004.

Also on display will be 3M's new MicroTouch SC Series of resistive controllers.

Designed to support 3M's full range of resistive touch screens for liquid crystal displays (LCDs), the SC Series is serial plug and play and USB human interface device (HID) class compliant for kiosk and industrial control applications.
