Multi-Tech Systems is now shipping its Multimodem Icell wireless modems designed for mission-critical M2M remote monitoring and control applications.

The external modem features Multi-Tech's universal internet protocol (UIP) stack and a five-port general-purpose input-output (GPIO) interface, providing remote signal monitoring for a range of control systems.

The application programming interface (API) for the IP stack means that designers only need to program IP functionality once for multiple applications and the GPIO interface enables the modem to capture and analyse data from remote sensors such as tank levels, cargo-door access and temperature.

Bill Chesney, vice-president of sales and marketing for Multi-Tech Systems, said: 'Based on input from our customers, we packaged into a single product the most important features and communications options needed to keep track of remote equipment.' The Multimodem Icell modems are available now in UMTS/HSDPA and EDGE/GSM/GPRS models, with CDMA technology available later in the year.

The modems are claimed to combine industry-standard cellular technologies, multiple interface options, a built-in IP stack and comprehensive service and support.

Multi-Tech's UIP consists of a common set of TCP/IP networking protocols and M2M applications using a standard AT command interface.

UIP allows developers to write their host applications once, while having the freedom to select from a number of Multi-Tech communication options, according to the company.

The modem's GPIO interface, which features five general-purpose sensor pins, accommodates a number of 'handshaking' modes with peripheral equipment through the monitoring of voltage changes.

Input conditions include programmable digital input/output, digital outputs and ADC.

Multi-Tech Systems is a data communications and telecommunications technology company based in Minneapolis, US.
