Piezoelectric actuator plates for hard-disk drives allow a greater density of data per disk

Morgan Electro Ceramics, a manufacturer of electro ceramic components, has announced its new piezoelectric actuator plates for manufacturers of hard-disk drives. The high performance PZT plates allow for more accurate control of the read/write head compared with alternative actuators and as a result manufacturers can benefit from increased storage capacity per disk and faster address times.

This reduces the number of storage discs required, which ultimately allows smaller servers to be built.

The company's world-class modern manufacturing capabilities ensure high repeatability of components, which are 0.25mm squared to 5mm squared in size, to tight dimensional tolerances even at high volumes.

With a production capacity in excess of three million pieces per week, defect rates are less than one part per million.

'Pressure from end users for better performance systems in a reduced size and at a lower cost has placed a demand from the industry to increase the storage capacity on disc drives', says Peter Morten, President, Morgan Electro Ceramics.

'We work closely with our customers to develop the PZT piezoceramic actuator plates, which are used for secondary actuation, and our reliable manufacturing techniques allow us to deliver the components right first time'.

'It also gives fantastic capability for other applications needing similar products like piezo motors and mobile phones'.

The actuators are just one of many high-performance components, including RF capacitors and microwave ceramics, that are used as part of the enabling technology in consumer devices such as computers, mobile phones and cameras.
