Ex-Zarlink team have designs on growth

Celebrating its first birthday, a Plymouth company is building an enviable reputation for innovation in the field of electronics design while doubling its staff from four to eight.

Celebrating its first birthday this month (May), a Plymouth company is building an enviable reputation for innovation in the field of electronics design while doubling its staff from four to eight. Reporting a successful first year, Moortec of Roborough was helped by Business Link Devon and Cornwall with financial and strategy guidance from manager Colin Sawer and with advice through Business Link's Information Gateway on employment law, health and safety and image design companies. 'The advice from Business Link and from our business mentor guiding lights was brilliant and resulted in levels of business being much better than we expected in our first year', said Managing Director Steve Crosher.

'Both the initial and ongoing support are playing a big role in our success'.

Formed by a group of four friends made redundant from internationally known firm Zarlink Semiconductor (formerly Mitel), Moortec specialises in offering product development to innovators and electronics firms at both chip and printed circuit board levels.

One of only two integrated circuit design companies this side of Bristol, the company is particularly focusing its service on the emerging wireless market.

'Wireless telemetry standards using low power design techniques is a big growth area', explained Crosher.

'Related technologies are being applied to all sectors of industry including medical and consumer sectors and we hope that, by demonstrating our wireless design capability, we can help innovative south west companies invent new products, create new jobs and become more prosperous'.

The Moortec team is already working for companies on wireless alarm systems, a satellite navigation system and an ultra low power medical device.

'One third of Europe's electronic design is carried out in the UK and that is something we should build on in the South West', added Crosher.

'Often not recognised, the region is rich in engineering talent and, with continued business support, will provide fertile ground for innovation companies and also for firms from elsewhere in Europe seeking design resource'.

'Our opportunity lies in the emerging model of companies outsourcing work to small design groups, like ourselves, in order to keep annual personnel overheads low', he concluded.
