Debut for novel broadband broadcast technology
NTT and Motorola have completed the world's first public demonstration of emerging M-MPLS (multicast multiprotocol label switching) technology.

NTT and Motorola have completed the world's first public demonstration of emerging M-MPLS (multicast multiprotocol label switching) technology. M-MPLS is a broadband transport mechanism that enables new network services requiring broadcast and quality of service features that are not possible with current multicasting technology. The two companies are developing a number of new service applications, the first of which are video distribution over digital subscriber line and fibre to the home (FTTH), which will deliver rich media services to consumers.
NTT Network Service Systems Laboratory - a research arm of the NTT Group - and Motorola Computer Group, a leading supplier of industry standards-based embedded systems and value-added services, have collaborated to define the M-MPLS specification and move it into the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) standardisation process, where it continues to gain support.
At the MPLS 2003 International Conference in Washington, DC, this week, NTT and Motorola are demonstrating a network of PC routers implementing the draft specification and a simulation of the control plane to show its scalability.
Motorola intends to offer functionality such as M-MPLS in a new range of application-enabling platforms based on the AdvancedTCA specification, highlighting its continued drive to make embedded computing easier for network equipment providers.
Motorola will also offer this draft specification M-MPLS software through its NetPlane software product line.
"This innovative new technology will enable both the simultaneous distribution of large volumes of data, such as streaming video, and real-time interactive multimedia communication for millions of users", said Seisho Yasukawa, Senior Research Engineer, NTT Network Service Systems Laboratory.
"M-MPLS is a practical application of extending emerging MPLS technology, which will be important in next-generation packet-based networks.
It could very well become the base technology for a range of exciting new services across a number of different networks".
"Carriers see M-MPLS as a way to not only reduce costs, but also offer new services that enable additional flexibility for customers, and perhaps more importantly, additional revenue opportunities for themselves", said John Fryer, Director of Product Marketing, Motorola Computer Group.
