A South Tyneside electronics company is helping to crack car crime through a pioneering high-tech system that links into an owner's Bluetooth device, such as a mobile phone. Contract electronics manufacturer Mitsumi UK, based in Jarrow, has been awarded the contract to produce the revolutionary system called Auto-txt that combines satellite vehicle tracking and everyday Bluetooth technology as found in a mobile phone today.
A professionally fitted Auto-txt security unit is concealed in the car which authenticates the driver on starting the ignition.
If the ignition is turned on without the authorised phone being recognised a message is sent to the command centre to alert them that the car may be being stolen and to track the vehicle.
The command centre contacts the owner to verify the status of the car and if it has been stolen the Police are notified.

The command centre can track the car 24 hours a day, seven days a week anywhere in Europe.
Once a stolen car is stationary with the engine switched off, police can authorise the Auto-txt command centre to remotely disable the vehicle using wireless technology It is hoped the tracking system will rid the UK of one of the worst vehicle theft problems in Europe with over 53% of the cars under six years old being stolen with their keys in the ignition as well as from house thefts and owners personal possessions.
Mitsumi is manufacturing electronic subassemblies for the inventors of Auto-txt, Coventry-based RDM Group a designer of electrical, mechanical and trim related systems for the automotive industry.
Auto-txt is currently available to all car owners as an after-market product but Jaguar cars and Land Rover have also selected Auto-txt to supply car tracking and security systems for all their cars from 2006.
Phil Nelson, Mitsumi Sales Manager, said: 'This system is expected to have a significant impact on reducing the number of cars being stolen but more importantly an increase in the number of criminals being caught'.
'The market is already growing for this type of product and sales are expected to be huge'.
Auto-txt is accredited to the Thatcham Category 5* standard, the new UK insurance standard governing all stolen vehicle recovery systems.
It is the most comprehensive standard to date, covering technical criteria, service and performance, and the vehicle recovery procedures.
Chris Cole, RDM said: 'A unique feature of Auto-txt is it's an enhanced level of security against the rising trend in key related car theft'.
'Owners can have multi-authorised numbers programmed into a Bluetooth disc so other member of the family or friends can drive the car'.
'It will only be tracked and disabled if driven by an unauthorised driver'.
'The other added benefit is it stops you forgetting your mobile phone'.
