Octalica has licensed a MIPS32 core for next-generation SoCs targeted at digital home applications based on MoCA (Multimedia over Coax Alliance) specifications

Octalica has licensed a MIPS32 core for next-generation SoCs targeted at digital home applications. Octalica, whose primary applications include digital video recorders, set-top boxes and home gateways, enables high-speed digital networks over existing coaxial infrastructure, based on MoCA (Multimedia over Coax Alliance) specifications.

'Although today's providers of 'triple play' services are faced with a multitude of alternatives for distributing multimedia content, MoCA is rapidly emerging as the technology of choice', said Moti Kintzlinger, Chief Executive Officer at Octalica.

'Our MoCA-based solutions demand superior performance coupled with both area and power efficiency and the MIPS core exceeded these requirements'.

Although MoCA is an emerging market, industry experts are predicting a rapid ramp-up towards large volumes.

In its new report entitled 'Home networking - in search of the killer technology', iSuppli Corporation estimates that shipments of networking products for homes with an existing wired infrastructure will rise by more than a factor of almost 20 in the next four years, to hit 260 million units worldwide in 2011.

'Consumers are looking beyond the living room and demanding easy and immediate access to voice, data and video throughout the home', said Brad Holtzinger, Vice President of Worldwide Sales at MIPS Technologies.

'We're delighted that Octalica has selected a MIPS-based solution to help make the connected home a reality, and we look forward to expanding our leadership throughout this exciting space'.
