Vesta Corp, an engineering consulting firm specialising in the communications industry, announced that it has joined the MIPS Alliance Programme

The Vesta Cryptography Accelerator 2 (VCA2) is Vesta's first IP core available under the MIPS Alliance Programme. The VCA2 provides up to 1Gbit/s of bulk cryptography, and is ideally suited for applications requiring line-speed IPsec performance such as routers, switches, and DSLAMs. Supported algorithms include DES, 3DES, AES128, AES192, AES256, MD5 (Hash), SHA-1 (Hash), HMAC-MD5-96, and HMAC-SHA-1-96.

Cryptography accelerator chips capable of this level of performance typically cost $100-300.

By integrating the cryptography accelerator into a system chip, line-speed IPsec VPNs can be supported for a fraction of the cost, board area, and power consumption.

'Many of our customers already use MIPS processors in their applications', said Joseph Harwood, President of Vesta Corp.

'The VCA2 is designed to easily connect to embedded MIPS-based cores, providing inexpensive line-speed IPsec performance for any device.

And our XpressVPN IPsec software stack is designed with the VCA2 in mind, so customers don't have to do the hardware/software integration'.

'We are pleased to have Vesta's VCA2 in the MIPS Alliance Programme', said Kevin Meyer, vice president of marketing at MIPS.

'IPsec-based VPN equipment sales have continued to grow strongly, even in the challenging economic environment of the past year.

An integrated solution that makes it simple and inexpensive to provide line-speed IPsec capability in communications equipment will accelerate this trend'.
