Zarlink Semiconductor has launched the ZL10037 satellite tuner for standard definition (SD) and high definition (HD) digital satellite television receivers used in PayTV systems

The ZL10037 direct conversion tuner, coupled with the ZL10313 satellite demodulator, offers a high-performance, low-power solution for quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) satellite receivers. The ZL10037 tuner also delivers HD-compliant performance when used with an 8-PSK demodulator. With satellite PayTV operators rolling out HD services in 2005 and 2006, demand for HD satellite set-top-boxes is set to grow dramatically.

IMS Research forecasts that by 2010, over 33 million households will receive HD services by satellite.

'The ZL10037 device is a strong solution for both low-cost standard definition PayTV boxes, and the emerging market for 8PSK HD broadcast satellite equipment', said Bob Ferreira, DTV Front-End Product Line Director, Zarlink Semiconductor.

'We now offer tuners optimised for the three key satellite segments - the ZL10037 chip for QPSK and 8PSK PayTV; the ZL10038 device for full DVB-S2 compliant systems; and the ZL10039 tuner for Free-to-Air equipment'.

Ideal for PayTV systems, the ZL10037 device provides good immunity to strong adjacent channel signals.

The 8PSK capability also addresses DVB-S2 broadcast-mode only systems.

A 'power and forget' VCO eliminates the need for the time-consuming VCO calibration required by most competing products, and an integrated RF loop-through minimises external component count and cost.

The ZL10037 tuner consumes only 500 mW with further power savings achieved via programmable power optimisation settings.

Zarlink's ZLE10542 reference design, targeted primarily at PayTV QPSK satellite receiver systems, is a complete front-end solution that combines the ZL10037 tuner with the ZL10313 demodulator.

A key feature is high-speed 'blind scan', where an on-chip hard-wired controller enables the demodulator to achieve ultra-fast channel scanning capability with little intervention from an external processor.

The ZLE10542 two-chip RF subsystem consumes less than 1W of power in full operation.

An integrated sleep pin reduces power consumption a thousand-fold in stand-by mode.

The ZL10037 tuner is in full production and is supplied in a 28-pin 5x5mm quad-flat-no lead package.

The ZLE10542 reference design is available to qualified customers.
