four for high-density TDM

The MT90871 from Zarlink Semiconductor delivers a fourfold reduction in board space, system cost, and power consumption by providing the same capacity as four conventional 4096 x 4096 channel switching chips. The MT90871 is based on Zarlink's unique four-in-one switching matrix that boosts the performance and flexibility of TDM equipment.

The device provides 8K x 8K channels unidirectional switching capacity.
It also functions as a dual nonblocking switch with timeslot interchange capacity of 4K x 4K channels between backplane and local, local to backplane, local to local, and backplane to backplane streams.

Currently, it requires four 4K x 4K devices to design an 8K x 8K nonblocking switching matrix.
This same capacity can now be delivered by a single MT90871, which reduces board space, power consumption and cost by nearly four times.
The MT90871 also features per stream rate conversion.
The chip can convert any incoming voice-data stream from one speed to another, for example, from 2 to 8Mbit/s.
This key feature lowers system costs by eliminating the need for external rate conversion devices, and allows designers to more efficiently manage bandwidth.
The MT90871 includes dedicated high-impedance control outputs for optional external drivers.
This further improves bandwidth efficiency by eliminating the need to allocate one or more steams to perform high-impedance control.
The MT90871 offers datarates of 2, 4, 8 and 16Mbit/s.
Operating core voltage is 1.8V with 3.3V-tolerant inputs and outputs.
Zarlink's family of high-density TDM switches comprises the MT90868 blocking switch, with a maximum capacity of 32K x 8K channels; the MT90869 nonblocking 16K x 16K digital switch; the MT90870 nonblocking 12K x 12K digital switch; and the MT90871 nonblocking 8K x 8K switch.
All four TDM switching chips are in volume production.
For 1000-off quantities, the MT90868 is priced at US$189, the MT90869 at US$94.50, the MT90870 at US$75.60 and the MT90871 at US$64.97.
The MT90868 is packaged in a 466-ball PBGA (plastic ball grid array).
The MT90869 and MT90870 are housed in 272-ball PBGAs.
The new MT90871 is available in a 196-ball LBGA (low-profile BGA) measuring only 15 x 15mm with a 1.0mm ball pitch.
All four switches are manufactured in 0.18-micron CMOS.
