Parallel fibre modules
offer up to 30Gbit/s
Available now from Zarlink Semiconductor are a pair of low-priced 30Gbit/s 12-channel parallel fibre modules for VSR optical interconnect in high-bandwidth applications
The MFT62340A-J transmitter and the MFR62340A-J receiver offer the industry's widest range of channel datarates, from 155Mbit/s to 2.5Gbit/s per channel, for an aggregate bandwidth of 30Gbit/s. As Internet and data traffic volumes grow, the major bottleneck is in and between extremely high capacity equipment in the central office and enterprise equipment rooms.

To help realise the full capabilities of multi-terabit gear, service providers are replacing copper and single-mode, single-channel fibre-optic links with parallel fibre modules for VSR interconnection.
Zarlink's J-lead transmitter and receiver modules are targeted at price-sensitive VSR interconnect in applications ranging from terabit routers, switches and crossconnects, to digital video transmissions, transponders and industrial systems.
Zarlink's 623 family of parallel fibre modules delivers low cost and reliable performance.
The modules use 850nm oxide VCSELs (vertical cavity surface emitting lasers) and PIN diode receivers with Zarlink's patented and unique self-alignment technology for coupling light to the fibre array.
The next product in the 623 family, an ultra-low-cost, four-channel 10Gbit/s transmit/receive pair, is expected to be launched in mid-2002.

Zarlink is also designing industry-standard pluggable, connectorised 12-channel parallel fibre modules capable of transmitting 33Gbit/s.
Sampling to alpha customers will begin in mid-2002, with volume manufacturing expected to commence later this year.
"Our goal is to combine Zarlink's formidable optical and integrated circuit technologies to provide solutions that solve the bandwidth bottleneck for our customers", said Jitesh Vadhia, vice president and general manager, Optical and Analog division, Zarlink Semiconductor.
"We have entered the 30Gbit/s VSR market with high performance modules that are competitively priced for a wide variety of high bandwidth optical interconnect needs, in everything from communications to industrial applications".
The MFT62340A-J transmitter and MFR62340A-J receiver pair offers a very broad bandwidth range, making it well suited for a variety of high-datarate interconnect applications.
Bandwidth starts at an industry low of 155Mbit/s per channel, to 2.5Gbit/s per channel, for a maximum 12-channel capacity of 30Gbit/s.
The 623 family also supports different datarates operating simultaneously in the same link.
Effective transmission ranges from 800m at 155Mbit/s, to 400m at 1.25Gbit/s, and 100m at 2.5Gbit/s.
The modules achieve a very low channel BER (bit error rate) of 10-12 when used as a pair.
They are available with standard MPO/MTP multimode fibre connectors.
The MFT62340A-J transmitter and the MFR62340A-J receiver are in volume production and available from stock.
The modules are supplied in a 50-pin J-lead dual inline package.
Pricing starts at US$1100 per transmitter/receiver link.
A full evaluation kit (part number MFEK6001-TC), including evaluation boards and a 10m connectorised test fibre, is available for US$2400.
