Platforms promise broadband over copper

A new range of communications platforms that allow broadband fibre performance to be obtained from conventional copper cabling is now available in the UK from Microtel

The new Multi-Pair family of products, which offer a scalable family of standards compliant and affordable solutions, are based on a technology known as MetaLoop, developed by Actelis Networks of Fremont, California. This new technology combines several (patents pending) techniques which turn ordinary copper-pair cable into a fibre-quality broadband transmission medium.

The new technique depends on several copper pairs being available for connection, and uses the industry standard G.SHDSL spectral envelope on the lines to ensure OFCOM compliance and avoid interference to other services.

A high degree of computational power is applied to each connection, with state-of-the-art algorithms covering areas such as innovative error-correction coding, spread-spectrum-like scrambling methods, noise cancellation techniques, cable structure analysis, cable temperature analysis, automated deployment tools and installation problem resolution tools.

The result is a fully symmetrical communication link with a bit error rate of better that 10e-12, at least 10,000 times better than the previous best copper technology.

The link is immune to noise and interference, and its low delay of below 3ms makes it suitable for any type of service.

Ethernet, ATM, TDM, voice and even the most sensitive studio-quality video have all been tested and approved by carriers for use with this system.

Multi-Pair platforms available from Microtel range from the ML 50 Series - a compact modem available in two to eight copper-pair configurations - up to the ML1300 Series: a high-density point-to-multipoint EFM (Ethernet in the First Mile) system that can aggregate a number of ML50 units to deliver multiple high-performance symmetrical Ethernet services.

For mid-range applications, the ML100E is an EFM solution which can deliver carrier-class 2-67Mbit/s Ethernet services to small to medium-sized enterprises, with a reach of up to 5.5km.

Offering superior noise resiliency and low delay for voice and video quality transmission, The unit is fully environmentally hardened and OSMINE-compliant.

These new platforms are suited to a wide range of point-to-point or point-to-multipoint applications for both service providers and enterprises, including transparent LAN services, fast Internet access, metro Ethernet extensions, private campus networks carrying voice and video over IP, and DSLAM, cellular, Wi-Fi and MSDU/MTU backhaul.
