MGE UPS Systems, the biggest manufacturer of large power protection equipment within the UK, this month celebrates its 20th year in this country. The company is also celebrating its 2003-2004 year end results, which report a growth in total turnover of 24%, including 84% growth in the channel business, predominantly in the IT sector, and 15% growth in direct sales and attributed to disaster recovery and defence. In 1984, MGE was formed under the Merlin Gerin name, as part of Groupe Schneider.

The company, under the control of Frank Totty, General Manager, focused initially on the three-phase market.

Quickly winning household name customers including Abbey National, Lloyds Bank and Rothmans, MGE soon earned a reputation for delivering quality products and back up service and steadily grew the business to what it has become today.

Andrew Taylor, MGE UPS' MD says: 'Delivering a high quality, reliable product, backed up by exceptional pre- and post-sale service, led MGE to becoming the market leader in the UK for three-phase UPS systems and outstanding service'.

'Maintaining that standard over the past 20 years, focusing on key accounts and keeping our customers' best interests at the heart of our decision-making processes, has led to our ongoing success'.

'As our offering has expanded to encompass power quality solutions for desktop PCs to large data centres we have maintained the quality of products and service at all levels'.

In 1986 MGE began promoting single-phase product 5-10kVA UPS' to compliment its larger units.

By now the company was providing tailored power solutions for a variety of IT applications for the financial and telecomms sectors for customers such as Worldcom, NatWest and Lloyds.

In 1989 MGE changed its name to Schneider but still used the Merlin Gerin brand, as it does today.

In 1996, however, MGE UPS Systems was formed as the result of a management buyout after which it immediately implemented a strategy of strong international development.

In 2001 an ambitious action plan to improve performance was launched.

This resulted in an operating margin of 12.4% in 2002 and 2003, one of the highest in the industry.

Taylor concludes: 'Since the MBO we haven't looked back'.

'Even though the market conditions have seen the two extremes in recent years, MGE has continuously strived to produce good financial results and has been very successful in anticipating the markets needs in terms of technology and service'.

'In 2004 Schneider acquired 85% of MGE but it still remains a separate company with separate management within the group'.

This gives our customers a 'one stop shop' for a single, power quality solution'.

'Quality products and quality service remain, as they started, at the heart of our success'.
