Mentor Graphics is offering a free GDS-to-Oasis translation utility to promote the adoption of the new Oasis standard

The translator can be downloaded at from the Mentor Graphics website. Oasis is the new stream format created in response to the need for more efficient handling of growing data volumes and is designed to replace the current GDS format. More than 40 people, representing more than 20 companies, worked together to develop the new format.

Mentor Graphics was involved from the inception, serving for many months as editor of the draft specification, then developing and contributing the translator utility.

This new encapsulated format offers substantial improvements in data volume efficiency, up to 50x reduction in hierarchical data volume from GDSII, and 2x and more reduction in flat data volume from MEBES mode5 mask writing format.

As a result, data handling overhead is significantly reduced.

Several research papers have been published on the benefits of Oasis; most include benchmark studies of file size containment.

Papers can also be downloaded for free from the Mentor website.
