UK designer scoops top award
A UK PCB designer has beaten entries from all over the world to take best overall design in the 18th Mentor Graphics PCB Technology Leadership Awards
A UK printed circuit board designer, Steven Tipping of Agere's Computing Connectivity Division, has beaten entries from all over the world to take best overall design and best design for the datacommunications category in the 18th Mentor Graphics PCB Technology Leadership Awards. "Steven Tipping's entry is a fine example of why UK engineers win such a substantial share of European electronics design projects", said Mark Paraskeva of Mentor Graphics Western Europe.

"Over the years we have seen extraordinary growth in both the quality and the complexity of the award entries for what I believe has a strong claim to being the EDA industry's most prestigious PCB design competition and it's always a thrill when UK engineering shows the rest of the world a clean pair of heels".
Tipping's winning PCB entry is the WaveLAN WL1141 PHY module, combining RF and baseband functions for Wi-Fi 802.11b.
"With Agere's PHY module, developers can easily incorporate Wi-Fi into their PC and consumer electronics products without the background required in radio design.
The flexibility of the Mentor Graphics Board Station solution, combined with Agere's wireless design expertise, allowed us to be the first in the industry to develop a single-package, RF and baseband multichip module targeting wireless networking applications", said Steven Tipping, PCB Designer in Agere's Computing Connectivity Division.
The longest running competition of its kind for PCB designers in the EDA industry, Mentor's Technology Leadership Awards programme is open to any designs created with Mentor Graphics PCB solutions, including the Board Station, Expedition and PADS design tools.
This year's competition attracted submissions from countries around the world, including Austria, Belgium, Canada, China, Germany, India, Israel, Korea, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Singapore, Slovenia, Switzerland and the UK.
Industry experts judged entries in seven categories representing a wide variety of fields: computer; consumer electronics and peripherals; datacommunications; industrial control, instrumentation, security and medical; military and aerospace; telecommunications; and transportation and automotive as well as best design overall.
