New infra-red LEDs from Marl International have an emission wavelength that falls centrally in the sensitivity band for night vision goggle image intensifiers, as well as some CCD cameras. The company packages the LED chips into solid-state panel lamps which can be skin-mounted on aircraft and other vehicles. In direct viewing applications, such as covert station keeping equipment for military helicopters and other weapons platforms, the range under perfect conditions is 4km.

When used for illumination, for example, driving lights for land vehicles, two emitters are sufficient to illuminate an area of terrain in front of the vehicle.

Other applications include helideck lighting, surveillance for counter-terrorism equipment, and convoy lighting.

Marl's IR lamps are cool running, and are invisible to the naked eye.
