Building on its heritage of constant innovation in order to enhance the work of developers using real-time operating systems, LynuxWorks has unveiled upgrades to its flagship real-time operating system, LynxOS, with LynxOS 4.2, which fully exploits today's more powerful hardware designs with increased memory, and includes an updated Linux application binary interface (ABI) and support for new peripheral devices, including Serial ATA and PCI Express. LynxOS 4.2 has increased RAM (up to 1Gbyte), enabling developers to take full advantage of current hardware designs. LynxOS 4.2 also features a fully integrated, updated Gnu toolchain (3.2.2) and an enhanced Linux ABI (based on glibc 2.2.93) to provide a streamlined development and execution environment.
Prior to this latest upgrade, LynxOS was already the leading Posix conformant embedded operating system on the market - the first choice of customers who cannot afford downtime.
LynxOS forms the core of a wide array of systems, from postal mail sorting solutions to air traffic control systems, and from office printers and copiers to military field artillery; it provides a superior foundation for sophisticated real-time systems.
It also is the only hard real-time technology with broad conformance to open and de facto standards such as Linux, Posix and Unix.
'LynxOS is built on a proven heritage of inherent security, reliability and stability', said Sonia Leal, Senior Product Manager at LynuxWorks.
'In order to continue that heritage and aid developers, it was imperative for us to give our customers what they needed - an embedded OS that applies and supports the latest technologies'.
'With the enhancements in LynxOS 4.2, LynuxWorks is continuing its tradition of offering mission-critical performance and reliability, in an open development environment - and at no added cost to customers with a current LynxOS support package'.
LynxOS 4.2 supports the execution of dynamically linked Linux binary applications as if they were native LynxOS applications.
This gives customers the flexibility to use both Linux and LynxOS binary applications on a single LynxOS system.
LynxOS is the only real-time operating system to offer a Linux ABI layer, emphasising its commitment to leveraging open source software.
LynxOS 4.2 also supports newer device standards including Serial ATA and PCI Express, allowing customers to use some of the most advanced devices available today.
LynuxWorks' LynxOS 4.2 is available immediately from LynuxWorks.
Also available with LynxOS are LynuxWorks' premium tools.
More information is available on the LynuxWorks website on LynuxWorks' family of products and development and programming tools, including SpyKer and Luminosity.
