The LynxSecure Separation Kernel is designed to meet the needs for the highest level of embedded software security

LynxSecure uses the space and time partitioning features of LynxOS-178 safety-critical real-time operating system (RTOS) to provide the foundation for building highly secure systems using the MILS (multiple independent levels of security) architecture. LynxSecure is designed for certification to Common Criteria EAL-7 (Evaluated Assurance Level 7) as well as DO-178B Level A.

Many defence systems that handle unclassified and classified information of different levels of classification must support multilevel security (MLS) and meet the highest levels of information assurance.

The move towards network centric warfare (NCW) and towards interconnection of many defence systems to a global information grid (GIG) will increase the need for multilevel security.

Similar security requirements are increasingly found in commercial systems such as financial networks and the national infrastructure.

The LynxSecure separation kernel provides a migration path for current LynuxWorks customers and supports software reuse by enabling BlueCat Linux and LynxOS-178 to run in user mode within LynxSecure partitions.

This makes it very easy to support any existing Linux or Posix software applications within a highly robust secure system based on LynxSecure.

'As we continue the move towards interconnecting all kinds of intelligent devices and systems, security and reliability of embedded software becomes of paramount importance', according to LynuxWorks CEO Inder Singh.

'The LynxSecure approach supports the powerful MILS architecture essential for providing the highest levels of security while supporting the reuse of existing Linux and Posix applications software'.

'This is critical because if all application software had to be rewritten to achieve high assurance, we would end up limping along with less than secure systems'.

LynxSecure is designed to provide a scalable solution ranging from embedded systems to workstations and servers that can be applied to applications in embedded avionics products, weapons systems, C4ISR data systems as well as critical infrastructure control systems.

LynuxWorks' LynxSecure Separation Kernel is expected to be available in July 2005.
